SUMMARY:Tobias Carroll and Juan Martinez celebrate IN THE SIGHT
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to welcome Tobias Carroll and Juan Martinez to the store for an event in celebration of Caroll’s new novel In the Sight. \nAbout In the Sight:\nFarrier had been raised in the East…\nFurtive spaces on the outskirts of cities\, truck stops in the middle of nowhere\, and obscure research outposts — those are the places where Farrier did his work. What’s the nature of that work\, you ask? DIY brain modification\, for starters — highly experimental and in no way legal. When his past catches up with him\, Farrier sets out on a road trip without end\, frenetically crossing the country in search of redemption\, revisiting old haunts along the way.\nThis tale of open roads\, weird science\, and endless reinvention draws inspiration from Destroyer’s 2002 album This Night. It also features aviaries gone wrong\, obscure retail outlets\, and coffee. So much coffee. Don’t try this at home\, readers. \nTobias Carroll writes things. He is the author of four books: the novels Reel and Ex-Members; Transitory\, a short story collection; and Political Sign\, a work of nonfiction in the Object Lessons series. \nJuan Martinez is a writer and an associate professor of English at Northwestern University and the author of the horror novel Extended Stay (University of Arizona Press / Camino del Sol\, 2023) and of the story collection Best Worst American (Small Beer Press\, 2017). He is also a core faculty member for StoryStudio and the fiction editor for Jackleg Press. He lives with his family near Chicago. \n

SUMMARY:Days of the Locust: Conflict and Metaphor in the Age of Plague
DESCRIPTION:(David Hay\, David Tromblay\, kt mather\, Joey Truman\, Svetlana Lavochkina)\nIn 2019\, we received a submission of a novel for young adults about a homeschooling experiment\, climate disaster\, and plague. That novel was published in March 2020\, before the world went to hell. Also that month\, we accepted a novel dealing with essential workers in a time of catastrophe. Why are our creative writers so prescient? And when will the world heed our warning? We’ll gather a group of authors whose recent works have foretold crisis and explore ways to do better at listening to them.

SUMMARY:Trapped: Svetlana Lavochkina & Stefan Rak in Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Join Whiskey Tit stalwarts Svetlana Lavochkina (ZAP\, DAM DUCHESS)\, Stefan O. Rak (ADVENTURES OF BASTARD AND M.E.)\, with SPECIAL GUEST Chicago’s own Valya Dudycz Lupescu and musical guests as we make landfall on Chicago for a perfect storm of reading\, music\, and the sweet brown sauce.   HEAR Svetlana’s DAM DUCHESS\, lauded for its “savage ironies twisting every sentence.”  WITNESS Stefan’s ADVENTURES\, “A pataphysical\, oulipian\, menippean satire of and maybe the only real antidote to our current alternative truth\, synthetic drug-fueled\, semi-consensual nightmare of a civilization.”  DRINK our Whiskey.  GROOVE to our jam. \nDo we have friends in Chicago? Can we make some? Join us and see. \nSvetlana Lavochkina is a Ukrainian-born novelist\, poet and poetry translator\, now residing in Germany. Her novella DAM DUCHESS (Whiskey Tit\, 2018) was chosen runner-up in the Paris Literary Prize. Her debut novel\, ZAP (Whiskey Tit\, 2017)\, was shortlisted for Tibor & Jones Pageturner Prize 2015. \nStefan O. Rak lives in New York City\, because it makes sense. In the 1940s\, his grandparents fled Ukraine for NYC\, otherwise he may have never been born. He’s worked as an archival director\, film professor\, record producer\, experimental music programmer\, and bartender. Rak’s ADVENTURES OF BASTARD AND M.E. is a pataphysical romp through a seedy underworld of criminal comic charactersWhiskey Tit attempts to restore degradation and degeneracy to the literary arts. We are unwilling to sacrifice intellectual rigour\, unrelenting playfulness\, and visual beauty\, often leading to texts that would otherwise be abandoned in a homogenised literary landscape. In a world gone mad\, our refusal to make this sacrifice is an act of civil service and civil disobedience alike\, and our work reflects this.

SUMMARY:Cooking Cockroach launch at Printed Matter St. Mark's
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Printed Matter St Marks for the launch of Joey Truman’s Cooking Cockroach: A Guide To Modern Poverty on Saturday\, March 16 at 5pm. \nWatch the author cook a bean or two. While a professor gives him the grief. He’ll read one a chapter. Maybe field a couple questions. Beers and wines and whiskey. \n“First we eat. Then we do everything else.” – M.F.K. Fisher \nAuthor Joey Truman’s interpretation of this statement takes the desire to eat into a philosophical and practical question that can only be answered by another question: How do we eat when we are on the ropes? The answer: Well. We eat well. \nIt is hard to be poor\, but being poor is simple\, you don’t have any money. It is hard to be a chef\, but cooking is simple\, you cook what you have. \nUse everything\, waste nothing. Pay attention\, and learn from your mistakes. \nJoey Truman writes about poverty\, disconnection in an unjust world\, and the unintended consequences these take on the unwitting citizens of society. He uses magical realism as a way to transcend this in his books Postal Child and Parlay. He also writes about being poor and disaffected in Wyoming as a teenager in books like Killing The Math and the soon to be published Killing The Math [II]. He has a book about etiquette coming out next December and a book about bees called Ruiner due out next spring. All books from Whiskey Tit press. \nWhiskey Tit is an independent press based in Vermont and New York City\, run by publisher Miette Gillette\, committed to publishing new works of intellectual rigor\, playfulness\, and visual beauty. \nThis event is free and open to the public at 38 St Marks Place.
